Jefferson – William M. “Bill” Maskal, 79, passed away peacefully at his home on January 22, 2026.
Born in Lakewood, Ohio, on January 6, 1947, Bill was the son of William and Ann (Florcosky) Maskal. After graduating from Lakewood High School, he proudly answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army, where he served honorably during the Vietnam Conflict. His deep sense of patriotism and duty carried through every aspect of his life.
A man of great dedication and integrity, Bill devoted more than 25 years to the Cleveland Public Water Company. He took pride in his work and never shied away from a hard day’s effort, believing that honest labor was one of life’s greatest measures of character.
On August 3, 2015, Bill married the love of his life, Susan M. Kane. Their years together were filled with laughter, faith, companionship, and deep affection. Though their marriage lasted only eight and a half years, it was built on a strong foundation of mutual devotion and countless treasured memories.
Bill’s faith was central to his life. A longtime member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson and Our Lady of Peace in Ashtabula, he humbly served the Lord as one of the church’s most faithful altar servers and gave countless hours volunteering at parish activities, especially at the beloved fish fries for over 20 years.
He found great joy in tending to his yard and taking spontaneous “one-tank trips” with Susan to explore the beauty of Ohio and beyond. His gentle spirit extended to his love of animals—especially his cats, and most fondly, his beloved Oscar.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Susan; her sons, Ryan (Stephanie) Cusman and Robert (Kristen) Cusman; his sister, Lynn Schreiber; his brother, Terry Maskal; and his brothers-in-law, Bill (Cindy) Kane and Jim (Alice) Kane. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Gary Schreiber.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 32 E. Jefferson Street, Jefferson, Ohio. Burial of his ashes with military honors will follow on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
Bill Maskal will be remembered as a proud veteran, a devoted husband, a faithful servant of the church, and a man whose quiet strength and steady love touched all who knew him.
