William A. McCune, 77, Passed away Sunday morning, January 16, 2022 at a nursing home following a long illness.
He was born in Conneaut, Ohio on April 29,1944, the son of Clifford P. McCune and Carolyn M. (Westenfelder) McCune.
He grew up in Dorset, Ohio. William graduated in 1962 from Jefferson Area High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in March, 1963, he did a tour of duty in Thailand, November 1963 - October 1964 and was part of the military advisory group. He was later stationed at Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, TX where he was honorably discharged in March, 1966. William worked at Buckeye Masonry for six years then in 1976 he was selected to be the Business Agent for Labor Local 245, Ashtabula, Ohio until he retired in 2002. He served for several years on the Jefferson Village Council and was elected Mayor of Jefferson in 1992 and served until 1999.
On Dec 14, 1968 he married Suzanne Sherrange, they celebrated 51 years of marriage until her death on August 4, 2020.
He loved to golf, enjoyed watching westerns and reruns of Law and Order, was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes and spent ten winters in Florida with his wife following their retirement. William found great joy and happiness when spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.
He is survived by daughters: Melissa (Shamus) Walters of Hillard, Ohio and Melinda (Scott) Oswiecinski of Dublin, Ohio, grandchildren: Taven and Caden Walters and Ben and Ryan Oswiecinski, sisters Jan (Anthony) Covetta of Jefferson, Joyce (Ed) DeDecker of Port St. Lucie, FL, Jackie (Ken) Prescott of San Angelo, TX and his niece Kristie Prescott of Jefferson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022 from 11:00a - 12:00p with a funeral service to follow at 12:00p at the Jefferson Home of Fleming and Billman Funeral Directors, 49 West Jefferson Street, Jefferson, Ohio. A burial will immediately follow the funeral service at Oakdale Cemetery.
