Wilbert P. Petric passed away on March 29, 2026, at his home just one month shy of his 81st birthday. He was known to those who loved him as Will.
He was born on April 21, 1945, the son of Wilbert J. and Etta May (Monagle) Petric.
He was a 1963 graduate of Ashtabula High School. He received a degree in Education from Kent State University, and a Master of Education from Edinboro University. He had a long career of 40 years as a teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, mostly in the sixth grade, where he also served as a basketball coach. He was a well respected educator, much beloved by his former students who have written glowingly of their experience in his classroom and how he made learning fun. He always went the extra mile to give his students learning experiences outside the classroom through field trips, including to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.
Will married Linda J. Merilla on June 22, 1968. They had been married nearly 57 years at the time of Linda's passing in April, 2025. It was a long, happy marriage that included extensive travel in the United States and several trips to Europe, often to visit their ancestral homes, Linda in Finland, and Will in Slovenia. They were instrumental in bringing family members from Europe to the United States for visits.
Born on a dairy farm, Will spent his young years helping on the farm, exploring the woods and enjoying nature. His love of the outdoors and nature remained throughout his entire life. On his farm, he kept horses, sheep, ducks, and occasionally chickens and rabbits. There was always a beloved cat or two. He planted tens of thousands of seedling trees on his own property, as well as all around Austinburg Township. He had his students help him plant, as well as Girl Scout troops. His grandson, William, was recruited as a little tot to help.
Will was a musician. He played the accordian, the guitar and the banjo. He used music extensively in his teaching. Many of us remember him leading us in song with his guitar around the campfire at the big 4th of July extravaganzas he and Linda hosted on their property for many years. He was a huge fan of John Denver.
Sadly, Will experienced serious health challenges during his last five years. But he never gave up and remained active and independent despite the obstacles.
Will is survived by his daughter, Nicole Petric; grandson, William Fritts; sister, Eileen (Gary) Rood ; brother, Edward (Cecelia) Sterling; nephew, Scott Rood; and many other neices and nephews and great neices and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Betty Ross Petric; his brother, John Ross Petric; his sister, Jan (Hugh) Lenart; and his beloved wife Linda Petric.
Per Will's wishes, a small graveside service was held on Wednesday, March 25, at Oakdale Cemetary.
The family recommends memorial contributions be made to The Parkinsons Association or the charity of the donor's choice.
