SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP -Shirley Washut, 86, has now forever been joined with her husband Mike, who was the love of her life; Shirley died peacefully at home on June 13, 2021 surrounded by family.
She was born May 29, 1935 in New Lexington, Ohio the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Allen) Carney.
She married Michael Washut on August 6, 1955. Shirley loved reading, gardening, quilting, cooking and baking and was known for her top quality pies. Shirley coached the Ashtabula YMCA swim team for many years and can be credited with developing a number of champion swimmers from the Ashtabula area. Many of her swimmers received college scholarships.
She is survived by her son Thomas Washut of Madison, Ohio and daughters Deborah (Clark) Hewitt, Saybrook, Ohio, Linda (Randall) Schiff, Plymouth, Ohio, Beth (Matt) D'Arcy, Euclid, Ohio and grandchildren Steven (Melissa) Hewitt, Ryan Hewitt, Megan Schiff, Michael D'Arcy, Jane D'Arcy and great-granddaughter Alexa Hewitt; her brothers: Doug, Nick, Dave and Ed Carney; and her sisters: Linda Thomas, Nancy Williams, Cynthia Buzby, and Charlene Pine.
She was preceded in death by her husband Michael Washut in 2010, her parents Charles and Margaret Carney, and her brothers Daniel Carney and Patrick Carney.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at Fleming-Billman Funeral Home, 49 W. Jefferson Street, Jefferson, Ohio; Calling hour 11:00-12:00 and funeral at 12:00. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
