Shirley Jean (Kemmer) Humphrey

Shirley J. Humphrey, 93 of Ashtabula died Saturday (Sept. 7th) at the Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born October 12, 1925 in Ashtabula the daughter of Leonard G. and Eulah May (Bartholomew) Kemmer and has been a lifetime area resident.

She was a 1943 graduate of Ashtabula High School.

Shirley was an energetic, engaged woman who always tried to make a difference in the world. She was a proud lifelong New Deal Democrat who knew and met several Presidents, Governors and numerous public officials. She retired from the Ashtabula County Board of Elections. To fulfill her desire to be a journalist she crafted and submitted well written letters to the editor of the local paper.

She was independent and proud to live on her own until earlier this year, she was a strong spirit. She enjoyed road trips and playing cinch with her husband Nelson and their friends Joe and Maryann Birmingham. Later in life she enjoyed taking some cruises, bus trips and checking out some of the casinos. Every Friday she enjoyed meeting friends at the mall for lunch.

Shirley always enjoyed the Indians, Browns, Cavs and the Buckeyes especially Urban Meyer.

Surviving her is her son Brian (Catherine) Humphrey of Mentor, Ohio; two daughters, Kay Humphrey (Chris Savarese) of Ashtabula and Dr. Wendy Humphrey of Naples, Florida; four grandchildren, Phil (Jessica) Humphrey, Carrie (Jon) Ahlborn, Brandon Perkovich and Ian Perkovich and her great grandchildren, Hannah, Brody, Caelan and Aidan. Her parents, her husband Nelson H. Humphrey, a son, Todd L. Humphrey and a sister Dorothea preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held Sunday (Sept. 15th) at 4:00 Pm at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with Pastor Barry Holub officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
