Mary Shannon Obituary

Mary Margaret Shannon, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024, in Columbus, Ohio where she had resided for the past 12 years.

Born May 28, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mary grew up in the country in Austinburg, Ohio and resided in Ashtabula for most of her life. When she met her husband James W. Shannon, she knew right away that they would one day be married, and they celebrated 52 years of life’s adventures together.  With her three children and grandchildren, Mary was the matriarch who held her family together and enjoyed life to the fullest.  She always supported her children; she leaves with them her spirit of independence, her resilient strength through adversity, her deep faith, and her mischievous sense of humor.

Mary enjoyed her career as a school secretary at the elementary and junior high school levels, working many years with the Buckeye Local School District and North Kingsville Schools, retiring in 1993.  The friendships she formed with people were lifelong and she could always be counted on for a good laugh sprinkled with good advice.  Her home was open to everyone, and she made everyone feel a part of her family. She enjoyed painting, boating and being on the water, gardening in her yard, and being with her family and “Fergus”, her West Highland Terrier. She and her family were proud of their Irish heritage. She traveled to Ireland eight times, discovering new family along the way.

Survivors include her three children, James M. (Liz Peterka) Shannon of Dublin, Ohio; Mary Kay (John) Meagher of Powell, Ohio; and Lynne A. (Jim) Montgomery of Ashtabula; and three grandchildren, James M. Shannon, James (Jay) R. Montgomery, and Sean R. Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Shannon whom she married June 25, 1960, and her parents John Reed and Margaret (Franko) Goss, and her brother James R. Goss.
