Louis Kerestesy Obituary

Louis P. Kerestesy, beloved partner, father, grandfather and friend, died February 1, 2022, at the Jefferson Healthcare Center in Jefferson, Ohio. He was 82 years old. Lou was born in Erie, PA where Erie Tech High School was the source of stories of friends and mischief his grandchildren would one day laugh at. He joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and served proudly before parting with the government’s grateful blessing, and four more years of stories. Lou returned to Erie to tend bar at Ricardo’s, where a local businessman spotted his charm and hired him to sell hearing aids – door-to-door. In 1965 Lou moved to Geneva, OH with his wife and two sons. He launched what became a successful 30-year practice testing hearing and fitting hearing aids before the professional practice of audiology existed. He cared about and for members of the community and their families, making life-long customers and partnerships with leading ear, nose and throat doctors in Northeastern Ohio. Lou’s claims to otolaryngology are not confirmed, however his hearing aid practice was grandfathered in when the state established licensing requirements. He served on the board of the Ohio Hearing Aid Society, purchased the professional building in which his practice was located, and eventually sold his practice to a fellow audiologist. When not working, Lou enjoyed the company of family and friends golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing - all of which were sources for more stories Lou would tell when he could find new, believing ears. He loved Jefferson and his home there, enjoying taking care of the property, grilling in the summer and lighting fires in the winter. Usually in the fireplace. Over the last 15 years he created more memories with his partner Chris, who, out of Lou’s line of sight, would silently warn unsuspecting audiences of suspect stories. Lou had more heart than words to express it with. He was loved by many and tussled with more than a few. He died in peace with moist eyes and funny stories recalled by family and friends, and with some wonderful friends who showed up to help his partner and sons with matters of the estate. Lou lived life his way and likely has some explaining to do to his Maker. But people who know him think a good story will do the trick. Lou is survived by his partner, two sons, four grandchildren and a step-family. They wish to thank the staff of the Jefferson Healthcare Center for making him comfortable in the last days of his life, and the Fleming and Billman Funeral Home, Jefferson for services provided to the family, and the private service they held in February. A celebration of Lou’s life will be held at the Lenox Community Center at 2509 Lenox New Lyme Rd, Jefferson OH, Saturday May 14 from1-3 PM.
