Leah J Mead

Ashtabula - Leah Joyce Mead, age 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-
grandmother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 24 th , 2021. She was born on
August 5, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan. Leah was the only child of Pauline and Harold Thomas.
She moved to West Andover as a young child upon the passing of her parents in 1943. Leah
was lovingly raised by her Aunt & Uncle Ruby and Dick Lower. Leah graduated from Andover
High School in 1949 and from Ashtabula Business College in 1951. Leah married the love of her
life Merlin in 1950, then dedicated the rest of her life to her home, family and community.
Leah was active in the Ashtabula Chapter of the American Red Cross having received a 50-year
service pin, the Ashtabula First United Methodist Church, the Covered Bridge Festival, the
Ashtabula County Historical Society and the Grange. She loved to sew and made several
beautiful quilts for her family. Leah is survived by her two children, Deborah (Tom) Owens of
Woodbury, Minnesota, John (Carol) Mead of Ashtabula and her three “world’s greatest”
grandchildren, Leah Calvin (Andrew) of Wisconsin, and William Owens (Amanda) and Elizabeth
Owens of Minnesota. She also enjoyed her great-grandchildren Elijah and Daniel Calvin and
Evangeline Owens, as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces and
nephews. She was preceded by her parents and her husband. Due to COVID-19, a private
family service will be held Saturday March 6, followed by a Celebration of Life later this year.
