Larry R. Albert
Celebration of life for Larry R. Albert, age 72 of Painesville, will be held on Thursday,
July 21st in the Flight Terminal at Debonne Vineyards in Madison. Visitation is from 3:00
– 6:00 PM with the Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 PM. Please join us for a casual
happy hour in memory of Larry.
Larry passed away at Hillcrest Hospital ICU in Mayfield Heights on July 13th, 2022 as a
result of a 3-day sudden severe illness following his recent rafting trip down the Salmon
River in Idaho.
Larry was born on December 27, 1949 to the late Russell and Anna Mary Albert of
Ashtabula. Sports were always a big part of Larry’s life, from Little League to varsity
high school sports (baseball, basketball, and football) for the Ashtabula Panthers,
graduating in 1968. His love for sports continued his entire life with cycling, golfing,
pickleball, hiking, anything outdoors, and was a lifelong Cleveland Indians (Guardians)
and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Larry attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and
graduated from The Ohio State University in 1974. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran who
served during the Vietnam War, stationed on the USS Oriskany.
Larry started his career at Parker Hannifin in 1974 as an accounting trainee. He
progressed through the financial organization ranks holding such positions as
Accounting Manager, Division Controller, Group VP Controller, and Director of Lean
Financial Systems, leading the lean accounting initiatives around the world. He met his
wife, Jan, while working on the Uniroyal acquisition in Red Oak, Iowa where Jan was
the Employee Relations Manager. After a long-distance romance, they married in 1985
and moved with her children to Ohio. Jan then continued her career with Parker
Hannifin, retiring in 2015. Larry convinced Jan that he should retire early in 2006 so he
could ride his bike cross country (“while he was still young enough”). He completed a
great cross-country trip (Oregon to Maine), which he thoroughly enjoyed, documenting
the trip along the way on crazyguyonabike.com/larrya along with other trips he has
taken. He had a true passion for cycling, doing many rides over the years with his Dad,
Russ and local rides with his brother Jeff. Larry and Jan enjoyed traveling to numerous
countries for cruise/cycling trips on their tandem. He also took many golf trips with his
close friends. Together with Jan he enjoyed biking, camping and travel in their
motorhome, and looked forward to spending their winters in Arizona. Everyone loved
Larry – he lived life to its fullest and loved his family, his friends, his bike, and his beer.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter Julie Koschik (John), stepdaughter Shawnda
Tench (Tom), and stepson Shad Sungren (Sarah), grandchildren, Laura and Erin
Koschik, Evan Tench, Ryan and Reid Sungren, brother Jeff Albert (Sharon), extended
family and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister
Judy Albert.
To honor his memory and commitment to bicycle travel, donations may be made in
Larry’s memory to Adventure Cycling Association, 150 East Pine Street, Missoula, MT
59802.
