L. Marian McLean, 101, died peacefully with her family at her bedside, Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Community Care Center, Hospice Care, in Alliance, Ohio after a short illness.
Born November 8, 1918, in Conneaut, Ohio, she was the daughter of Wade Sweet and Flora (Ward) Sweet. She graduated from Andover High School, in Andover, Ohio and Ashtabula Business College in Ashtabula after which she went to work at Citizens Budget Savings and Loan as a secretary and teller. On August 16, 1941, Marian married J.D. Murray McLean and resided in Ashtabula, Ohio. During World War II, Marian moved to Greenville, Pa to live with her parents while her husband served in the US Army. While there she worked in civil service at the Keystone Arsenal near Meadville, Pa. Later, joining her husband in Texas, she worked at the Army Airbase near Austin, Texas. After the war, Marian and Murray resettled back in Ashtabula. From 1960 to 1968, she worked as a grey lady at the Ashtabula General Hospital, and from 1967 to 1974, worked as a teller at the Farmers National Bank and the election board for 35 years.
Marian was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, Ohio, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and a deacon. She was a 60 - year member of the Eastern Star, chapter 10, and served on the Rainbow Girls Board. She was a den mother in the Cub Scouts and a member of the Woman’s Club, holding several offices. She was also a 35 Year member of the National Campers and Hiking Association. In 1995 she and her husband moved to Copeland Oaks in Sebring, Ohio where she joined the Sebring Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed camping, gardening, bowling, playing golf, playing bridge, and visiting with her many grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons: John (Donna) McLean of Ashtabula, Lloyd (Linda) of Sharpsburg, Ga., and Ron (significant other Barbara Planton) of Westerville; a daughter, Kathryn (Donald) Stafford of Minerva, eight grandchildren, eighteen great grand-children, and two great- great grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years J.D. Murray; brother, Clifton Sweet, Sister, Gladys Harry, a grandson, Mark McLean and a daughter in law Marcia McLean.
Service will be held Saturday, February 1,2020 at noon at Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula with grandson Pastor Murray Stafford of Victory Baptist Chapel in St. Clairsville, Ohio and the Rev. Martin Radcliff of Sebring Presbyterian Church of Sebring, Ohio officiating. Burial will be in Saybrook Township Cemetery.
Calling hour will be Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Foundation in Ashtabula or the Life Care Fund of Copeland Oaks.
