Judith Rose Jewell, age 78, died Monday, January 15, 2024, at her home in Jefferson. She and her family only learned of her advanced heart condition a few days before her passing.
Judy was born on April 27, 1945, in Conneaut, Ohio, the 8th child of twelve to Lloyd and Clara (Tompkins) Ashley. Judy was a fraternal twin. Unfortunately, her brother Joey, passed away during infancy. She spent the majority of her life in Ashtabula County but she also lived in Lewiston, NY and Payson, AZ.
When Judy was 14, she suffered a stroke but she refused to let this experience define her. She recovered so well that it was impossible to tell she’d had one.
Judy loved to travel - Alaska and Washington were the only states that she didn’t get to explore. She was one of the first 2 women hired at Linde Air in Ashtabula, Ohio to not work in the office but instead work out in the facility alongside the men. Her ability to get along easily with others, coupled with her strong moral code got the attention of her co-workers, who voted her in as strike captain when there was a labor dispute at the facility in the late 1970s.She started working in the jewelry department at Walmart while she was living in Payson, Arizona in the mid 1980’s. When Judy and her husband, Russ, decided to return to Northeast Ohio to live, she transferred to the newly opened Ashtabula Walmart as the jewelry department manager. She retired in 2009 after working at Walmart for 20 years.
Judy enjoyed spending time drawing, painting and crocheting. She especially loved spending time with her large extended family and was always there if you needed a helping hand.
Her strength, independence, generosity and confidence was a wonderful example for her children, grandchildren and others. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
Judy is survived by her children: Kim, Sonya and Ron, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, her brother, Dennis and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
