James Ellis Henry

James Ellis Henry, 76, passed away on June 15, 2026, following a long illness that he faced with remarkable strength and courage.

Born on October 25, 1949, in Urbana, Arkansas, Jim was the son of Ellis B. and Willie B. (Thompson) Henry. He moved to Ashtabula as a young boy, where his exceptional athletic ability quickly set him apart. From an early age, it was clear that Jim possessed rare talent, discipline, and drive—qualities that would define much of his life.

A proud graduate of Harbor High School, and a member of the 1968 Championship team, Jim established himself as one of the most outstanding defensive backs in the school’s history. His speed, instinct, and physical presence on the field made him a formidable competitor and a respected teammate. His performance earned him a scholarship to Western Kentucky University, a testament not only to his ability but to his dedication to excellence. Jim remained deeply proud of his time as a Harbor Mariner, and the friendships forged through football became lifelong bonds he treasured.

After college, Jim began working at Reliance Electric in Ashtabula, but he felt called to serve his community in a greater way. Initially pursuing a career in the fire department, his path took a meaningful turn when members of the Ashtabula Police Department recognized his character and potential. Encouraged to join their ranks, Jim embraced a career in law enforcement that would leave a lasting mark on the city he loved.

As a police officer, Jim became known not only for his strength and presence but for his integrity, compassion, and commitment to community policing. He was part of a generation of officers who built trust and made a tangible difference in the lives of those they served. Widely respected by his peers and the community alike, Jim’s legacy as an officer is one of dedication, honor, and lasting impact. The brotherhood he found within the department was a source of great pride throughout his life.

Jim’s faith was the foundation of who he was. A devoted member and deacon at People’s Baptist Church, he lived his beliefs through service, humility, and love for others. His church family was an important part of his life, and he remained active and faithful throughout the years.

While Jim enjoyed golf, music—especially Motown and jazz—and cheering on the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes, nothing brought him greater joy than his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who cherished every moment spent with those he loved. His family was his greatest source of pride and the center of his world.

Jim is survived by his loving family;  his children, J’tala Henry, Ciara Henry, and Javas Henry; his grandchildren, Taraji Ford, Kehlani Henry, and Adriana Henry; his wife JoAnn (Parks) Henry;  his sister, Clarice Henry; his dear nephew, Andre Miller Henry; his God-daughter, Chyvon (Barnes) Crockett; his former wife and dear friend, Ida Henry; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Occiephine Henry; and his beloved great-aunt, Iola Bradley.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at People’s Baptist Church, 3837 West Ave., Ashtabula. Calling hours will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
