Elsie Mae Walters, nee Page, age 89, passed away Sunday, the 23rd of June, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Madison, Ohio.
She was born in Mifflin Township, PA, the daughter of the late Robert W. and Alice Edith (Bumford) Page.
As a young girl, Elsie had a heart condition that led her to spend a year in a Pittsburgh hospital. Upon discharge, Elsie’s parents were advised that some cleaner, country air would benefit Elsie’s health, so the family moved to Littles Corners, PA where she spent her formative years. She graduated from Saegertown High School and, around that time, met her future husband, Ronald G. Walters, while both worked at the Oakland Beach Hotel on Conneaut Lake. In marrying Ron, who was beginning his career in the United States Coast Guard, Elsie married military life and officially became a “Coastie’s wife.” Many changes to duty stations took them all around the Great Lakes region, and led to Elsie setting up many, many homes, creating a sense of normalcy for their children, Ronnie and Ronda. Their military career eventually brought them to the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Cleveland where Ron retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after 35 years of service. It was Elsie’s love, grace, and devotion that allowed for such a successful career; she was the epitome of a “military wife.”
After their retirement, Elsie and Ron settled in Jefferson, OH where they purchased a century home that they worked tirelessly to completely remodel, both inside and out. It became a showpiece of the community. From there, Ron and Elsie moved to Madison to be closer to their family. Elsie was a proud and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, committing herself to being fully present for every event and milestone in all of their lives, no matter how big or small.
Elsie is survived by her son Ronald Walters II (Rebekah) of Perry and daughter Ronda Brennen-Talikka (Hank) of Madison; grandchildren Tonia Gregoire (Daniel), Shane Brennen (Alison), Ronald Walters III, and Amber Walters; and great-grandchildren, Liam and Finnegan Brennen and Amelia Gregoire. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and two brothers, Robert and William.
Funeral services will be on Monday, July 1st, at Fleming and Billman Funeral Home, 49 West Jefferson Street. Family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. followed by services at Oakdale Cemetery (28 N. Market St., Jefferson, OH).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for the caregivers at the Lantern of Madison and the Hospice of the Western Reserve. Donations can be sent to her daughter, Ronda Brennen-Talikka, at 6720 Bayside Dr., Madison, OH 44057; the family will then present any donations directly to Elsie’s caregiving team.
