Donna Hanson

Donna Hanson, 85, of Jefferson, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness. She was born in Lenox Township on March 1, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Virgil E. Millard and Eva Lucille (Reichard) Steigerwald, and had remained a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Jefferson High School's Class of 1956.

Donna married Donald Hanson on September 14, 1956 and together they had three daughters - Delores Rohm, Jacki (David) Davis and Linda (Chip) Laugen. In her later years, Donna was able to welcome into the fold her stepson, Gregory (Michelle) Sandford.

She was a hard worker, beginning her career while still in high school at the local telephone company and then moving to the grocery business. She took business classes at the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School and worked up to a management position. She worked at many grocery stores over the years and retired from Thorne's Bi-Lo in 2011 due to health reasons.

She attended the Kingsville Presbyterian Church until she became homebound and was very grateful for the love and support she received from her church family during her final years.

Donna is survived by her daughters, 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, her siblings Nancy (Richard) Dewitt of grand Rapids, MI, Peggy Barnicoat of Kirtland, Oh, Karen McCoy of Painesville, Oh, and Ronald Ensell of Ashtabula, Oh.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents, her step-mother Virginia and step-father William; her sister Janice Messenger and her brothers William "Buddy" Steigerwald and Donald Ensell, and grandsons, Willard Rohm and Victor Rohm.

Calling hours will be held from 10:00-12:00 Saturday, September 23, with funeral service to follow at noon at Fleming-Billman funeral home, 49 W. Jefferson St. Jefferson, Ohio. Burial at Oakdale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to The Ashtabula Co. Nursing Home Activity Fund or to the Kingsville Presbyterian Church.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire staff of The Ashtabula County Nursing Home for the love and care they gave to their mother; their loving and compassionate care will never be forgotten.
