Deborah Sue “Debbi” Brockhurst passed away on Friday, August 27 at University Hospitals Cleveland after a short illness. She was one week away from her 60th birthday.
Debbi lived in Ashtabula for most of her life. She was a lifelong lover of rock’n’roll and enjoyed the local music scene. A voracious reader, she never lost her love of the written word and always had numerous books checked out from the Harbor-Topky Memorial Library. She loved crafts and painting. She was a concerned citizen who never missed an election and passed along her passion for civic engagement. Above all else, she was a dedicated and loving mother, aunt, sister, and daughter.
Debbi is survived by her son, Zach Wiita, and his fiancée, Sarah Brand; by her sister, Lisa Lester and her partner, Patrick Miller; by her brother, John Brockhurst and his partner Karen Vossers; by her father, Bill Cummings; by her half-sisters Michele Blodgett and Melissa Brockhurst; by her nieces and nephews, Sherri, Amanda, and Scotty; and by their children, Gage, Morgan, Brock, Delilah, Keegan, and Frankie. She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Higerd, and by her half-brother, Brian Brockhurst.
A memorial service will be Thursday (Sept. 2nd) at 12 pm at the Fleming & Billman Funeral Home, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula with visitation from 10 am until the time of service on Thursday.
The family has requested that all attendees wear a mask.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in her name to the GO Ministry Food Bank, PO Box 1173 Ashtabula, Ohio 44005.
These are the barest outlines of her life. But there are no words to express the depths of her compassion; the strength of her heart; the courage with which she faced the world; her dedication to truth; her demand for justice; the values by which she raised her son; or the love she held for her family and friends.
“The world did not stop turning when you left us. The ground did not shake. But it should have.
“It should have.”
