Obituary

Chester Douglas Arthur, known affectionately as Chet, passed away on the 11th of May at Saybrook Landing in Ashtabula in the presence of his loving family.

Chet was proud of his service as a United States Marine.  He was stationed as an embassy guard in Rome, Italy, and he later served courageously as a sergeant in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969.  He was awarded the Bronze Star twice and three Purple Hearts in addition to the Vietnam Service Medal.  He shared fascinating stories about his military experiences.

After attending California State University at Fullerton, he worked a long and distinguished career as a quality-assurance manager for a number of manufacturing companies around the United States, earning special distinction for hiring disabled veterans.

He retired in Jefferson, Ohio, where he doted on his wife, Marian, and enjoyed taking meticulous care of his home and garden. He loved science fiction, mysteries, and politics, and he was known to all his loved ones for his warm-heartedness, especially toward children and animals, as well as for his sly and clever sense of humor. Chet’s family remembers him for being a loving and tireless caregiver and for his generosity.

Chet is survived by his beloved wife Marian, who resides at Saybrook Landing; his loving children Ron (Jan) Kozlowski of Perry, Ohio; Shelly (Joe) Sinar, of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Gary (Annie) Arthur, of Renton, Washington; Valarie Rai Arthur and Sara Nichole Arthur; his sisters Victoria Keefer King of Keyport, Washington and Julie Ann Buckleu of Nashville, Tennessee. He was loved by his four grandchildren and their spouses: Jason (Carolyn) Kozlowski of Perry, Ohio; Shaun (Sheila) Kozlowski of Perry, Ohio; Jacqueline (Mike) Farinacci of Mentor, Ohio; and Kara Sinar of Aberdeen, South Dakota.  He had seven great grandchildren (Camryn; Nathan; Alayna; Collin; Avery; Jacob; and Charlotte).  Additionally, Chet is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Myrna (Earl) Brueggeman of Kent, Ohio and Jim (Sue) Rehlender of Strongsville, Ohio.

His family and friends were devoted to Chet and feel grateful for his presence in our lives.
