Charles Richard Cornell, 97, born November 12, 1927, in Boardman, Ohio, to Robert and Blanche (Bortz) Cornell, lived a life of dedication, creativity, and service.
A proud graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1945, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy in WWII, Charles built a distinguished 30-year career as an electrical engineer with General Electric in Jefferson and Cleveland.
On July 14, 1951, he married Shirley Jean Ensman, together they were blessed with a marriage filled with love, laughter and children; and as the family grew so did the priceless and cherished memories.
Beyond his profession, he was a gifted artist and active member of the Lake Shore Arts Club. He generously gave his time as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, a Disaster Relief team member for the Red Cross, and a devoted gardener. He was a faithful member of the First Congregational Church.
Charles is survived by his loving family; his beloved wife Shirley of 74 years; and their children: Denise (Harley) Jackson, Darcie Wehrung, Deloris Cornell, Richard (Allan Muniz) Cornell, Kay (Jeffery) Gianantonio, and Cliff Cornell; his grandchildren: Mike (Lisa) Hawkins, Jr., Darrin (Alma) Jackson, Erin Negron, Jennifer Jackson, Nathan Cornell, Delaney (Jake Phillips) Gianantonio, and Jared Gianantonio; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings: George Cornell, Blanche Gilfillan and Robert Cornell; and his son-in-law Tom Wehrung.
His life will be honored on Friday, November 7, at Fleming & Billman Funeral Home, 49 W. Jefferson Street in Jefferson, Ohio, with visitation from 11 AM to 1 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1 PM. Military honors will be observed as we remember and celebrate his remarkable journey.
