Carol W. Richards, 85 of Ashtabula died Monday (April 27th) at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. She was born December 3, 1934 in Ashtabula the daughter of Cyril and Hazel Woodworth.
She was a graduate of Edgewood High School and received her Bachelor’s in Education from Wheaton College and her Masters and PHD from the University of Rochester. She served as the curriculum director at the Guladet College for the blind in Washington DC. She had also taught sixth grade at an elementary school in New Mexico.
She was an active member of The United Church of Christ in Austinburg where she serves as Trustee’s Secretary, pianist, the Women’s United. She was also involved in the summer bible school and “Sleepover”, Christian Education, The Halo program, the Stewardship Committee, the special offering program and the Bread for the World, and Community dinners. While a member of the First Christian Church in Ashtabula, she was the part time organist, taught the Children’s Bible School and Camp Christian participant. At Our Lady of Peace, Mt. Carmel she was a member of Just Faith Group.
Surviving her is her husband, George R. Richards whom she married July 19, 1980; two daughters, Laura (Chris) Stankus of Illinois and Becky (Steve) Kunkle of Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren, Alussa, Chris, Jr., Jeff, Elizabeth and Tim. She was preceded in death by her son Phil Gargantiel and a sister, Vida Magnuson and a brother George Woodworth
Carol enjoyed growing flowers, Canning vegetables and fruits, making jams and jellies, working puzzles and spending time on her computer.
A memorial service at the Austinburg United Church in Christ will be held at a later date. The Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd.
