Michael Sopczak, Sr. Obituary

Michael J. Sopczak, Sr.  74 of Ashtabula passed peacefully in his home on Tuesday evening (Dec. 17th) surrounded by loved ones after a long bout with cancer. He was born April 9, 1945 in Geneva, Ohio the son of Stephen and Sophia (Krochmal) Sopczak.

He was a 1963 graduate of Geneva High School and attended Kent State University. Mike was a veteran of the US Air Force from 1963 until 1967 serving in the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed singing, golfing, fixing things, performing in plays, spending time with his family, cruising, going to casinos and watching his children and grandchildren grow up. He sang with the Good Life Singers and performed in the Green Door Follies. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace, Mt. Carmel Church.

Surviving him is his wife, Lois (Meola) Sopczak whom he married November 13, 1971, his children, Mike, Jr. (Julie) of North Canton, Missy (Scott) of Uniontown, Ohio and April (Kareem Hardin) of Glendale, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren,  Amber, Isaiah, Morgan, Ezra, Silas, Justin, Hope and Karma; sister and brother-in-law Berniece and Myron Niemi of Ashtabula; a brother-in-law, Buddy Meola of Sun Lakes, AZ; a sister-in-law, Aggie Sopczak of Columbus, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers, Steven Jr., Robert and Eugene.

A mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday (Dec. 21st) at 12:30 pm at Our Lady of Peace Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 East 21st St. Ashtabula, Ohio. Inurnment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday (Dec. 20th) from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd. Ashtabula, Ohio.
