Hugh Neil Van Winkle

March 23, 1929 ~ March 25, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old


Hugh N. Van Winkle, age 88, S. Spruce St., Jefferson, died Saturday afternoon in the Hospice Unit at Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.

 

He was born March 23, 1929 in New Lyme Twp., the son of Leo A. & Florence Y. (Hall) Van Winkle and has been a lifelong resident of this area.  He was married to Roberta M. Woodworth on September 5, 1968 in Jefferson.  Mr. Van Winkle was a veteran of the    U. S. Air Force, serving at the end of WWII and in the beginning of the Korean Conflict.  He was a 1990 retiree from the R. W. Sidley Co. in Thompson and was also a security guard for Lake Shore Resort.

 

Mr. Van Winkle was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dorset and the National American Legion.  He followed all the Cleveland sports teams.  He enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing cards, pitching horse shoes, playing ping pong and volleyball.  He participated in the Senior Olympics a few years ago in Youngstown.

 

He is survived by his wife, Roberta, seven children, Richard (Diana) Van Winkle & Ron (Sue) Van Winkle, both of Jefferson, Norman (Rose) Lewis of Wooster, Brian (Fah-Lee) Van Winkle of Leesburg, FL, Barbara Aqulina of Tucson, AZ , Patricia Gainey of Jefferson & Wanda (Charles Haught) Fox of Dorset, 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret “Peggy” Loomis of Austin, TX.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Charles Ward & Brandon Neil Van Winkle and two brothers, Glennie & Norman Van Winkle.

 

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 A. M. at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with Pastor Randy Brooks of the First Baptist Church in Dorset officiating.  Burial will be in Dorset Cemetery. 

 

Calling hours will be Thursday from 6-8 P. M. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Dorset, P. O.
