Aida L. Hernandez, age 77, Ashtabula, died unexpectedly Thursday morning upon arrival in the emergency room at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.
She was born July 6, 1941 in Coamo, Puerto Rico, the daughter of Domitilo & Ines (Rodriguez) Santiago and has lived in Ashtabula most of her life. Aida was a 32-year employee of Ashtabula General Hospital, then ACMC, retiring in 2008.
Aida was a breast cancer survivor and has always been supportive of the cure, hand making and donating blankets at their events. She enjoyed sewing and cooking and was famous for her “rice and beans”. She loved family time. Aida attended Our Lady of Peace-St. Joseph Parrish.
Survivors include six children, Elaine (Jose Nieves) Nelson, Luz (Bobby Gray) Ramos, Octavio (Roxanne Mosher) Hernandez, Jr. & Richard (Kathy Rich) Hernandez, all of Ashtabula, Iba (Steve) Burgess of Richmond, VA & Heriberto “Tito” (Sherry) Hernandez of Kingsville;11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her companion, William R. Martinez of Ashtabula; a sister, Hilda Santiago & brother, Angel Santiago, both of Puerto Rico and close friend, Shana Peer of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Octavio Hernandez, Sr. in 1992 and three brothers.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-7 PM with a rosary and service at 7:00 PM, led by Hilda Natar and Pat Bartone at the Ashtabula Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 526 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula.
Entombment services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula. Memorial contributions may be directed to the ACMC Cancer Care Center, 2420 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
