Simon D. Rechedy, age 92, Fairway Dr., Jefferson, died Wednesday morning at his residence.  He was born December 30, 1923 in Adamsville, PA to the late Peter & Emma (Melani) Rechedy.

Simon is survived by his wife, Frances (Brown) Lyzwa Rechedy, a son, Larry (Bonnie) Rechedy of Augusta, GA and two sisters, Angelena (William) Kerfoot  & Adelaide (Ralph) Giangiodano, both of Greenville, PA and a sister-in-law, Tony Rechedy.

Beside his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers and spouses, Ralph (Anna), James (Eileen), Remi & Roy (Lois) Rechedy and four sisters and spouses, Mary (Thomas) Dray, Rose (Glen) Lotzenhizer, Norma (Lloyd) Melvin & Lena (Joseph) Sugar.  He was married to Helen Roberts from 1945-1997 and Nancy Holodnak from 1999-2004, both of whom preceded him in death.

Simon attended grades 1-5 in a one room schoolhouse and was the only Rechedy sibling to attend and graduate from college.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the European Theatre from 1943-1946 during World War II.  He reached England aboard the Queen Elizabeth II, the ship being so crowed many soldiers had to sleep on the floor or in bathtubs.  He was classified as a sharp shooter and was an MP in the Army.

Simon graduated from Vernon High School, received his bachelors degree from Youngstown State College and his masters degree from Columbia University in New York City.  While at Youngstown State he was a star baseball player as a catcher and had a batting average of .372.  His teaching and coaching experience included Greene Local, Vernon Local & Cleveland Heights H. S.  At one time he was the youngest superintendent in Ohio.  His career included being a Superintendent at Deming/New Lyme School, Marietta City, Fort Frye Local, McDonald Local, Pymatuning Valley Local & Jefferson Local school districts.

His second career found him graduating from Virginia Tech University with a Golf Course Management certification.  He reconstructed golf courses in West Virginia  & South Carolina and  was manager of Hickory Grove Golf Course in Jefferson and the Lewisburg Elks Country Club in West Virginia.

His passion was gardening, growing and giving away vegetables.  He enjoyed playing golf and coaching basketball and baseball.  He loved all animals, especially his dogs.  He attended many Master’s and U. S. Open PGA events.  He owned and piloted his own plane, taking many friends to Canada for fishing.  He served on the Civil Air Patrol in West Virginia.

Simon’s many civic and educational organizations include the Jefferson Exchange Club, the Marietta Lions Club, the Retired Buckeye Association of School Administrators, the Lewisburg Elks Club and the Golf Course Superintendents Assoc. of America.  He was a member of the Half Century Club of YSU Alumni Assoc., as well as Phi Delta Kappa.

To say he will be missed is an understatement, as his 92 years were filled with allocades by those he had helped along the way.  His family, nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends from all over the country are saddened by their loss, but grateful for having known him.
